Our story

From a Y-DNA register to a broader research record

The earlier Asilah Y-DNA Project maintained a public register of paternal-lineage research centred on Asilah and the wider northern Moroccan region. This site carries those historical sample records forward under permanent ADP identifiers.

The present research record can hold both Y-DNA and mtDNA evidence for a sample. Each lineage has its own review and publication decision; a finding in one does not imply a finding in the other.

People and place

Asilah's ancestral communities

Families connected to Asilah and neighbouring communities have histories that reach across settlements and regions. We record reported ancestral places alongside genetic and historical evidence, while keeping uncertainty visible. A shared place name alone does not establish a shared lineage.

Research practice

How we assess a record

Y-DNA

Y-DNA follows a direct paternal line. Recorded classifications are presented with their evidence status and source context, and may change as research develops.

mtDNA

mtDNA follows a direct maternal line. Results and maternal origins are assessed separately from paternal findings before any public release.

Evidence and provenance

We distinguish reported ancestry, mapped geography and laboratory or research interpretation. Public dossiers show only reviewed fields; missing or uncertain evidence remains labelled as such.

Participation and privacy

Discuss sharing before anything is published

Participation is voluntary. A historical public record is not permission to publish additional personal details or new genetic findings. Any proposed public representation is reviewed for evidence, consent and privacy, with Y-DNA and mtDNA considered independently.

Interested in contributing?

Use an established private contact with the project to discuss participation and what information you are comfortable sharing. This site has no public DNA upload or enrolment form. Please do not send raw DNA files, kit identifiers or personal details through public pages.
